For dogs who destroy everything

It lasted one evening. You have a drawer full of the last ones.

Squeaker out in four minutes, stuffing across the rug by eight, and the shell in the bin by morning. You are not buying toys any more, you are renting them by the night. A coffee wood chew is not a toy. It is a piece of dense hardwood that gives him something to work at for weeks instead of something to finish.

  • Dense hardwood that wears down over weeks, not over an evening
  • Frays into soft fibres as he works it, rather than cracking into shards
  • The wood of the coffee plant, not the bean, so there is no caffeine in it
  • One ingredient. Nothing sprayed on, nothing baked in, no additives
  • Sixty days to see whether it survives him, or your money back

Three coffee wood chews in different sizes, laid out on a cream background

You have bought him nine toys this year.He has returned nine piles of stuffing.

The plush ones last an evening. The rubber ones last a fortnight and then come back in pieces. Rawhide goes soft, swells and turns into something you would rather he did not swallow. None of that is him being badly behaved. A dog with a real chewing drive is doing the thing he is built to do, and most of what is sold to him is built to lose.

  • Plush gives up on the first evening
  • Rubber lasts a fortnight and then comes apart
  • You are replacing the same purchase over and over

A pile of destroyed plush toys and chewed rubber on a cream background

Nothing is indestructible. The honest question is how it fails.

Anything he can get his teeth around will eventually give way. What matters is what it does on the way there. Soft toys come apart in mouthfuls he can swallow. Some hard chews snap and leave an edge. Coffee wood is dense enough to take weeks of work, and as it goes it frays into soft fibres rather than splitting into pieces with a point on them.

  • Soft toys fail in swallowable mouthfuls
  • Brittle chews can crack and leave an edge
  • This one wears away instead of breaking apart

A close crop of a shredded rawhide chew beside a cracked rubber toy

It is the tree, not the bean.So there is no caffeine in it.

Coffee wood is the pruned branchwood of the coffee plant, kiln dried and cut. It is a hardwood, which is why it stands up to a serious chewer, and it is the timber rather than the fruit, so none of what is in a coffee bean is in it. Nothing is added either. There is no flavour coating to wear off after a week and no binder holding it together.

A macro of the end grain of a coffee wood chew showing its dense fibres

He works at it. You get your evening back. And it is still there tomorrow.

A dog with a real chewing drive and nothing worth chewing will find something. The table leg, the skirting board, the one shoe you liked. Give him something dense enough to be worth the effort and he puts an hour into it and settles, then comes back to it the next night, and the night after that. That is the part nobody sells you. Not the chew lasting a month. The month you get back.

  • An hour of hard chewing, most nights
  • He goes back to it instead of your skirting board
  • Still there in the morning, and the week after that

The first chew

Hand it over straight from the bagNo soaking, no prep, nothing to set up.
Stay nearby for the first few sessionsThe same way you would with any new chew.
Let him set his own paceSome dogs gnaw right away, others take a day or two to work it out.

Keeping it going

Check the size every week or soIt wears down evenly, it does not break apart into pieces.
Retire it once it gets small enough to swallow wholeThe same rule as any chew, wood or otherwise.

A rawhide or a cheap stick is usually gone in an afternoon, which means buying again and watching him the whole time it lasts. Coffee wood is dense enough that most dogs are still working on the same piece weeks later. That is the entire trade you are making: fewer chews, less to buy, and less to watch for splinters in between.

A chew is $16.99 and lasts 4 to 8 weeks depending on how hard he goes at it, so it works out to well under a dollar a day even on the shorter end. There is nothing else to buy after the chew itself.

Finally found something he can’t destroy in a day

My dog destroys every chew I buy him. Most are gone in a few hours, but this one has actually lasted weeks. He still goes back to it every day and there are no little pieces all over the floor. Definitely the longest-lasting chew we’ve tried.

The things people ask us before they buy.

These are the questions that actually come in, mostly about how long it lasts and whether it is actually safe. If yours is not here, email helpyonderpets@gmail.com and a person will answer it.

It depends on the dog, but most owners tell us weeks rather than days. Coffee wood is dense all the way through, so instead of shredding apart the way a stick or a cheap chew can, it wears down slowly from the outside in. A determined chewer will still get through it faster than a dog who chews once a day, but either way it is built to be the opposite of a here-today-gone-tomorrow chew.
Yes. It comes from the dense root of the coffee plant, not the beans, and it is sold specifically because that density keeps it from splintering into sharp shards the way some sticks and antlers can. It wears down into a smooth, rounded surface instead. As with any chew, size it to your dog and retire it once it gets small enough to swallow whole.
No. Caffeine lives in the coffee bean, not the root the wood comes from. The chew has never been near a roasted bean and carries none of it.
As with any hard chew, small splinters can happen if a piece is bitten off, and a piece large enough to lodge is a reason to call your vet. What coffee wood is chosen for is that it resists breaking into those pieces in the first place, wearing down instead of cracking apart. Still, no chew replaces supervision, especially for the first few sessions with something new.
It works well for most adult dogs. For puppies still losing baby teeth, or for older dogs with worn or sensitive teeth, check with your vet first, the same as you would before giving any hard chew.
A yard stick is unpredictable. Different woods split differently, some carry mold or treated soil, and you cannot know how it will break down. Coffee wood is a single, consistent, food-grade material, chosen and cut specifically to wear down evenly rather than splinter.
Bully sticks and rawhide are usually gone in one long sitting, because they are digestible and meant to be worked through quickly. Coffee wood is not a food product, it is a hardwood, so it survives session after session instead of disappearing in one. If you are going through bully sticks every few days, this is built to outlast that by weeks, not hours.
Better than most things you have tried, though no chew is completely indestructible against a determined heavy chewer. The density that makes it last is the same thing that makes it harder to make fast progress on. If he is an aggressive chewer, size up rather than down, and check it regularly the way you would with any long-lasting chew.
It has a faint, natural wood smell, nothing like coffee grounds and nothing that lingers in a room. It does not stain fabric or flooring the way some dyed or treated chews can, since there is nothing added to it.
The same rule as any hard chew: once it has worn down small enough that he could swallow it whole, or if it cracks rather than wearing smoothly, it is time for a new one. Check it every week or so rather than waiting for a problem to show up.
Small suits dogs under 20 lb. Medium covers most dogs from 20 to 50 lb. Large is for anything heavier, or for a determined chewer who will get through a smaller piece too quickly to make it worth the savings. If he sits close to the line, size up.
